UNION TERRITORIES

Points to Remember:

1.       At Present there are 7 union territories:
1.1.    Andaman and Nicobar islands(1956)
1.2.    Delhi(1956)
1.3.    Lakshadweep(1956)
1.4.    Dadra & Nagar Haveli(1961)
1.5.    Daman & Diu(1962)
1.6.    Puducherry(1962)
1.7.    Chandigarh(1966)
2.       Part VIII (8) of the constitution deals with union territories
3.       Every union territory is administered by president acting through an administrator appointed by him. An administrator of Union territories is not head of the state like governor. The president can specify the designation for him. In Delhi designation for administrator is Lt. Governor.
4.       Lt. Governor is empowered to promulgate ordinances during recess of the assembly but he cannot promulgate an ordinance when the assembly is dissolved or suspended.
5.       Parliament can make laws on any subject of the three lists in relation to the Union Territories.
6.       Two union territories (Delhi & puducherry) have their own local legislatures.
